Hilary Duff was reluctant to move to New York after splitting from Mike Comrie.
The 'Younger' actress, who recently filed for divorce from the retired ice hockey player after separating from him in early 2014, admits she was "in a funky place" when she was approached to star in the new series and wasn't thrilled about the idea of uprooting their two-year-old son, Luca, from their home in Los Angeles.
But she says she "couldn't really turn it down" after getting a call from Darren Star, who also created 'Sex and the City' and was attracted to the role of Kelsey because she makes a lot of mistakes.
The former Disney star explained: "I didn't get to make many mistakes publicly in my life. I was always concerned with what people would think."
Hilary claims she is still trying to get people to realise she is no longer a child star.
The 27-year-old actress said: "I don't have to prove to people that I'm an adult now. I am an adult. It's frustrating to be put in a box, but I never needed to wild out to show that I'm grown up."
But the 'All About You' singer's reputation is very important to her and she ditched a lot of friends in her late teens in order to avoid getting into trouble.
She told the US edition of Cosmopolitan magazine: "At 19, I did a massive friend cleanse. That was really hard, to sit down with people and say 'We can't be friends anymore.' They were like 'That's f***ed up, you're a bitch.' But having a good reputation was important to me. That's not to say I didn't screw up and do little naughties here and there."
