IN BEELD. Topless voor vrouwenrechten

In tientallen Amerikaanse steden hebben vrouwen met ontbloot bovenlichaam deelgenomen aan ‘Go Topless Day’. 

Het evenement vindt elk jaar plaats in de aanloop naar Women’s Equality Day, een dag waarop de gelijkheid van vrouwen ten opzichte van mannen in de VS onder de loep wordt genomen. De organisatie achter Go Topless Day vindt dat vrouwen net als mannen het recht hebben om met ontblote torso in het openbaar te verschijnen.



In New York, Los Angeles en zestig andere steden over de hele wereld verschenen vrouwen topless op straat. Op de achtste Go Topless Day werd echter ook betoogd tegen een nakende beslissing van de New Yorkse burgemeester Bill de Blasio.

Sinds 1992 is het in de metropool wettelijk toegestaan om topless rond te lopen in de stad, maar er komt steeds meer kritiek op straatartiesten op Times Square met een laagje bodypaint op het bovenlijf. In ruil voor een kiekje met de alom aanwezige toeristen vragen zij een fooi. Maar volgens de burgemeester en zijn politiechef zijn de vrouwen storend, en wordt overwogen om ze te verbieden.
