De Britse prins William heeft zijn eerste dag als piloot van een helikopterambulance achter de rug. Bij de East Anglian Air Ambulance moet hij in het oosten van Engeland uitrukken in geval van nood. 

“Een job als deze houdt me met beide voeten op de grond, en dat is de kern van wat ik wil worden”, zei William bij aanvang van zijn eerste shift. “Ik doe wat ik kan om een goede kerel te zijn.” De prins werkte eerder bij de Britse luchtmacht als reddingspiloot in Wales.

In de eerste maanden van zijn nieuwe job zal hij diensten van negen en een half uur draaien, ook ’s nachts. Om zijn koninklijke taken met zijn werk te kunnen combineren, zullen Williams diensten later wat worden teruggeschroefd. Hij zal worden opgeroepen om bijvoorbeeld bijstand te verlenen bij verkeersongevallen of hartaanvallen.

Na het eerste deel van zijn opleiding nam de prins in april onbetaald verlof door de nakende geboorte van prinses Charlotte. Hij omschreef haar als “a little joy from heaven“, terwijl peuter prins George momenteel “a little monkey” is. William staat zijn loon als helikopterambulancier af aan het goede doel.
